That's all the gum in Korea, none of them are any good. When I visited my friend in Seoul one of the first things she noticed was that I had American gum and wanted some.

Ha, yeah, the Tokyo subway has early hours too, so I had to do the drink until the subway starts running again thing there. That ended up really poorly actually. I'd spent all my cash at the bar and had to ask the bartender for train fare, fell asleep sitting on a station bench an hour before it started running, and when I woke up three hours (of sleeping through running subways!) later, I found that I'd paid for the wrong line, so I had to walk anyway.

In an annoying way, I found Itaewon to be kinda comforting when I first visited. My experience seems backwards from yours...I was first dropped off in my neighborhood (NOT touristy at all) and slowly began to visit more touristy parts of town the longer I was here. The non-touristy parts do seem distant and hard to deal with. When I eat in my neighborhood most of the restaurants have menus only in Korean without any pictures. It's fun having no idea what you ordered or what you're eating. I'll learn. I intend to take Korean classes this fall.

Unfortunately the subway only runs till midnight-ish, sometimes we had to catch it closer to 11PM to get the last one. Completely missed it the first night I went out with friends. Seems like many people will stay out (on weekends) and wait for the first one in the morning and take that home, haha. Cabs are cheap though.

I think Koreans dress pretty well. It's definitely a style different than America. Women dress very conservatively on top and then usually wear dresses or skirts with heels on the bottom. A lot of it seems to depend on what part of town you're in. Around Gangnam and Hongdae there's younger, hipper people with more fashionable clothes. Overall, I'd say people here look pretty put together.

Itaewon was 90% of what I saw when I was in Seoul. I stayed on the base there both times I visited, except for the one night i stayed with a friend. It is the obnoxious tourist part of town, a popular name for it is the "American Ghetto," but the rest of the city can seem distant when you get dropped into Seoul for just two days. The subway seemed about as nice as Tokyo's, but not as crowded. Does it run all hours?

What do you think of the style there? I always got the impression that the average Korean was more nattily dressed than I would expect an American to be. That is one thing I miss, aesthetically pleasing pedestrians. I am not pleased about being back in the land of "Juicy" sweatpants in that respect.

I am adapting quite well over here. Seems to be getting a little bit better each day. Yesterday I "mastered" the subway. I'm sure you'll be fabulous at law school, but definitely consider taking a break to come over here and stay with me!
